2022 Summer Undergraduate Research
Even during the summer break, many DEEPS undergraduate students are engaged in groundbreaking research. We are proud to showcase some of these research projects with this photo series.

Alex Wilk: "I am analyzing organic molecules preserved in Indonesian lake sediments to reconstruct the interglacial paleoclimate in that region." (Advisor Jim Russell)

Charlie Madeiros: "I am analyzing charcoal levels in E African lake sediments to construct a record of fire frequency in the area in the early Holocene." (Advisor Jim Russell)

Daniel Zhou: "I am developing a geothermometer that uses Al and Cr content of Martian meteorites to estimate the parental melt temperature." (Advisor: Yan Liang)

Gordon Sherman: "I am developing a new analytical method to analyze alkenones from high N latitudes in order to obtain a paleotemperature record from this region." (Advisor: Yongsong Huang)

Jesse Miller: "I am analyzing carbon content of soils and river waters from Alaska to determine the role of deglaciation on the carbon cycle." (Advisor: Dan Ibarra)

Luke Fromm: "I am testing the efficacy of commercial satellites in detecting invasive Phragmites australis in RI freshwater marshes." (Advisor: Larry Smith)

Luke Randall: "I am analyzing Ti/Al ratios in pyroxenes from Martian meteorites and experimental samples to understand magma crystallization on Mars." (Advisor: Yan Liang)

Natalie Chang: "I am analyzing stable isotopes of oxygen and carbon from ~25,000 yr old lake sediments in the SW U.S. in order to better understand future climate change." (Advisor: Dan Ibarra)

Patrick McCann: "I am measuring the Sr, Nd, Pb, and Hf isotope ratios of Patagonian basalts to investigate patterns of mantle flow in that region." (Advisor: Alberto Saal)

Poom Yoosiri: "I am analyzing surface elevation data over the Arctic from the ICESat-2 satellite to improve estimates of sea ice concentration." (Advisor: Chris Horvat)

Shaw Miller: "I am analyzing stable isotopes of O and C from lake sediments to reconstruct precipitation balance in the SW U.S. during the last interglacial." (Advisor: Dan Ibarra)
