Department of Earth, Environmental & Planetary Sciences

Career Pathways and Resources

An Earth, Environmental and Planetary Sciences degree from Brown opens up a world of possibilities after graduation.

Our students learn cutting-edge skills such as systems thinking, spatial visualization, and data analysis in a rigorous and supportive educational environment. Students frequently work on teams with faculty, postdocs, and graduate students on a wide range of research projects, gaining hands-on laboratory and field experience as well as important networking and communication skills.

All four DEEPS concentrations prepare students to apply their skills in a wide variety of impactful and fulfilling careers, from environmental consulting, scientific research, and education to geoengineering and environmental law.

You can gain research skills crucial for graduate school and future research by collaborating with faculty members on an UTRA (Undergraduate Teaching and Research Assistantship). You can contact faculty members to see if they are interested in collaborating with you on a research proposal, or you can apply to an UTRA already posted on Workday.
Another way of gaining research experience is The National Science Foundation Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) program, where you can find summer research opportunities across the United States.
On-campus student jobs can be a great way of developing useful skills. A Teacher Assistantship can help you think more deeply and broadly about subject content, and develop valuable connections with DEEPS faculty. Working in a lab can be a good way to polish your research skills. You can also hone your communication skills by writing for campus newspapers, magazines and scientific publications.
Each semester, Career Day hosts DEEPS alumni to a special panel event to offer advice, answer questions, and share their career experiences after graduation.

Careers Resources For After Graduation

There are countless career possibilities following a degree from DEEPS, and with the help of mentoring and advising resources available to DEEPS students, you can make the most of the opportunities available to you.

The first step is to consider what kind of career would reflect your values, as well as make use of your skills. It is ok if you do not have a clear answer yet, as many professionals find their calling by exploring different types of jobs. Think of your first job as a starting point, not a final destination.

The following resources will help you find your first position after Brown:

  • Your Brown Network: Brown Alumni, faculty, and staff are an incredible resource. You can get in touch with the Brown network through platforms such as BrownConnect+ or the DEEPS LinkedIn Group.
  • Conferences: Another good place to find recruiters is geoscience conferences, like the meetings of the American Geophysical Union, and the Geological Society of America. DEEPS students can present their research and also interact with potential employers.
  • DEEPS Jobs: The Job Opportunities page on the DEEPS website has postings for open positions in the department.
