Career Opportunities & Research in Earth Sciences (CORES)

DEEPS CORES is a STEM outreach program to introduce Providence high school juniors to the field of earth and planetary sciences and the career opportunities it presents

For many years DEEPS at Brown University has been partnering with teachers in the Providence Public School District (PPSD) to develop and offer multi-lesson Earth Science modules that address the Next Generation Science Standards introduced in RI schools in 2016.

Since 2021-22 DEEPS in collaboration with Hope High School  has been developing a new STEM outreach program: DEEPS CORES (Career Opportunities and Research in Earth Sciences). The goal of this initiative is to introduce Hope high school sophomores and juniors to the field of earth and planetary sciences, career opportunities it presents, facilitate their access to Brown University summer programs and offer research experience in academic setting. Introducing students to Earth science research and career paths in high school can open the door for opportunities in college and beyond.

Program Structure

  1. Bi-monthly or weekly meetings throughout the academic year
    • 10th grade: Introduction to Earth and Planetary Sciences

    • 11th grade: Earth Systems, Carbon Cycle and Climate Change

  2. Support and mentoring of participating students for accessing Brown University's Summer @ Brown programs. Full scholarships will be available to all accepted PPSD students.
  3. Summer or academic year research internship opportunity with DEEPS faculty (3-7 weeks) offering first-hand experience of research process in academia and networking.

Introduction

Years 2021-2023 Review

  • ~15 interested juniors were enrolled in DEEPS CORES/Mrs Sully advisory.
  • Throughout the academic year 2022-23, we conducted 6 Earth and Planetary Sciences meetings, 5 Pre-College Program application meetings, and 3 Planetary Health and Environment meetings (in collaboration with Alpert Medical School) with the program class/interested students. These bi-monthly/weekly meetings were led by DEEPS graduate students and postdocs.
  • 12 Hope HS students applied to Brown Pre-College Program, 9 were accepted, 7 registered for summer courses
  • Pilot year exit survey: 100% of participating students who filled the survey (9) would recommend the program to friends or siblings.
  • 18 interested sophomores were enrolled in the same physics class for their junior year.
  • Throughout the academic year 2021-22, we conducted 6 Earth and Planetary Sciences meetings and 4 Pre-College Program application meetings with the program class/interested students. These monthly meetings were led by DEEPS graduate students and postdocs and had ELL support (Spanish).
  • 11 Hope HS students applied to Brown Pre-College Program, 8 were accepted, 7 registered for summer courses
  • Pilot year exit survey: 100% of participating students who filled the survey (11) would recommend the program to friends or siblings.

Who We Are

DEEPS CORES team are graduate and undergraduate students and postdocs who are passionate about the Earth and beyond and want to share their love for this field with high school students.

We are a big team, but here are some of our members who talk about their journeys into Earth, Environmental and Planetary Sciences.

Get Involved!

We welcome all undergraduate, graduate, and postdoctoral students interested in working with the local community and STEM education (no prior experience or knowledge necessary).

We need volunteers in various areas:
