Looking Forward to Spring 2024

The Spring 2024 semester begins this week, and we are excited to welcome everyone back to campus. We reached out to members of the DEEPS community to hear what they're looking forward to in the upcoming semester, and here's what they shared:

  • I'm looking forward to welcoming in spring on Brown's campus! Not only do I enjoy seeing the trees and flowers come to life, I love seeing the campus come alive with students filling every green space on campus with studies and sports, conversation, and laughter. It's a wonderful awakening! – Dina Egge, Department Manager

  • I'm looking forward to working on more collaborative research this spring, and getting to go back to learning from my friends and peers every day once the semester starts up again! – Brianna Hoegler, PhD Student

  • I’m excited to be working with Providence-area high school students to sample local rainwater, river water, and seawaters to investigate the signatures of extreme rainfall in a changing climate. – Kim Cobb, Director of the Institute at Brown for Environment and Society and DEEPS Professor

  • I’m looking forward to developing a new class that I hope to turn into a first-year seminar titled, “Geology of Star Wars.” – Emily H. G. Cooperdock, Assistant Professor

  • The crazy spring weather brings lots of teachable moments for my EEPS 0850 Weather & Climate class! – Meredith Hastings, George Ide Chace Professor of Physical Sciences

  • I’m looking forward to receiving samples from asteroid Bennu (returned by NASA’s OSIRIS-REx mission) and meeting lots of new students in my undergraduate Planetary Geology course (EEPS 0810)! – Ralph E. Milliken, Associate Professor

  • I'm looking forward, firstly, to returning to Providence full-time and rejoining the Brown and DEEPS community. I'm also excited for the kickoff of my group's new projects on human health and climate change in Kiribati. – Chris Horvat, Visiting Assistant Professor

  • I am excited that our postdoc community (and research group) in Lincoln Field is growing. I am also looking forward to co-shaping the future of the impact cratering science theme of the CaSSIS camera onboard ESA ExoMars Trace Gas Orbiter. – Aleksandra Sokołowska, Postdoctoral Research Associate

  • Spring 2024 will be a pivotal time in my academic career period – I look forward to leveraging my research and professional stepping stones, as well as spending a fruitful academic term with all of my amazing mentors and colleagues at DEEPS. – Bumsoo Kim, Postdoctoral Research Associate

  • This semester, I'm excited to lead a diverse and interdisciplinary reading group in Origin of Life and Astrobiology (OLA), encompassing a spectrum of participants from eager students to seasoned postdocs and professors.
